Dramatic Arts at The John Carroll School

Curricular Offerings

The Fine Arts Department curriculum offers the Acting I course, intended for beginning acting students as well as experienced actors. Emphasis is on the development of acting skills for the stage, including vocal productions, improvisation, stage directions, and character development. An overview of various methods of acting technique, stage terminology and production elements, i.e. set and lighting design, is included. Students will perform a monologue, multi-character scenes, and a one-act play before an invited audience. In Acting II, the students further develops skills in acting by focusing on script and character analysis. Students perform in-depth improvisations; present one dramatic and one comedic monologue; and perform a one act play before an invited audience. Additional emphasis is given to the elements of directing and stage management.

Extra-Curricular Experiences

Theatrical Productions—Fall and Spring Musicals

The John Carroll School Theatre Department produces two main stage musicals every year (fall and spring). The goal of this program is to nurture and sustain a high quality Performing Arts Department as students develop a passion that will stimulate them to achieve their full potential in theatre arts. All students, grades 9-12, experienced and inexperienced, are encouraged to participate. Students have the opportunity to audition for acting, singing, and dancing roles; while band and orchestra students may audition to participate in the pit orchestra. For students interested in the technical aspects of theatre, opportunities to participate in light/sound crew, as well as a set crew are available.

Hello Dolly – November 9, 10, 11, 2018

Hello, Dolly! is a classic, energetic musical filled with fantastic singing and dancing, charisma and heart. Matchmaker Dolly Levi is a widow, a matchmaker and, also, a professional meddler --but everything changes when she decides that the next match she needs to make is to find someone for herself. Set in New York City at the turn of the century, the adventures and comedy within this show make it fun, boisterous and charming from start to finish. Tickets to come soon!

Pippin – March 22, 23, 24, 2018
Heir to the throne, the young prince Pippin is in search of the secret to true happiness and fulfillment.  He seeks it in the glories of the battlefield and the intrigues of political power. In the end, Pippin finds that happiness lies not in extraordinary endeavors, but rather in the unextraordinary moments that happen every day.  Pippin’s message is universal and will connect with audiences across the age spectrum. Tickets to come soon!

Hello Dolly! Auditions

Wednesday, September 5th - Freshmen and Sophomores (3:45 to 6:00 - Auditorium)

Thursday, September 6th - Juniors and Seniors (3:45 to 6:00 - Auditorium)

All are welcome.  Wear comfortable clothing and shoes for dance auditions.  Come prepared to sing 16 bars of a song that best suits your vocal abilities.  We will also teach a portion of a song from the production.   If you have questions, please contact Mrs. Brueggemann (
